Melee Weapons

Axes
A widely used weapon in much of velitrium due to its versatility as a tool and a weapon.   The Common Axe, or 'Woodsman's Axe' is made in varying sizes from hatchet to two handed.  Small ones can be thrown.

The 'War Axe' or 'Battle Axe' comes in a variety of styles.  It is distinguished from the Common Axe by the second blade or spike on the head,  The haft is often, though not always, of metal for extra strength.

Double Bladed Axes are not common amongst the Velitar, but examples do occur amongst the Dwarves and from Khun Dhagra.

Executioner's Axe.  A ceremonial and Judicial weapon used exclusively for Executions.  Most towns have one, to carry out judgement with.

Maces are popular weapons due to their ability to crush armor, low cost (especially wood hafted ones) and relative ease of use.  It does not require years of study and practice to handle a mace competently.  Thay are made in both one hand and two handed versions.   Maces are one of the weapons available to Mitraen Priests who have taken the Vow of Combat.

Morningstars are not that common in Velitrium, but they are very popular with Goblins and Hob-Goblins, for manyof the same reasons as apply to maces.  Morningstars are more expensiv then a mace, but are visually more intimidating.  They come in a variety of sizes and lengths.

Flails, with or without spiked balls, are a common infantry weapon, especially with the Militia and Spear Levy in Velitrium.  It's similarity in design and use to the common agricultural flail, makes it  easy to use for the farmer.  Spiked versions are popular with the Goblins and Hob-Goblins but are rare as a Militia weapon in the Kingdom.
Flails (unspiked) are one of the weapons available to Mitraen Priests who have taken the Vow of Combat.  They are also often used by Guardian Druids.

War Hammers.   Despite stories of Dwarven axes, the War Hammer is by far the most common Dwarven combat weapon.  Generally Dwarven versions do have an axe blade on the back of the hammer, but the Hammer face is the weapon of choice for crushing enemies.  It is less common in human hands, though many mounted fighters carry a spiked war hammer as a secondary weapon.  Hammers, unbladed and without spikes, are one of the weapons available to Mitraen Priests who have taken the Vow of Combat.

Pole Axe.  The single most common pole arm (after the spear and lance) found in Velitrium or Khun Dhagra.  The shaft varies in length, typicaly from five to eight feet, depending on personal preference.  Combining the features of spear, axe and hammer, the powerful blows it can deliver are capable of chopping a horse's head off.  Despite the weapon's capabilities, it is not widely used except in the Army.  It requires considerable practice to use it well and is most effective when employed in disciplined formations.

Spear.  By far the single most common weapon of war in Velitrium.  It is cheap to produce, easy to train with and stores well.  Every community is required to maintain an arsenal of weapons againt emergency and the spear imposes the least financial hardship.  So common is it that these emergency Levy's have become known as the 'Spear Levy.'
Spear styles vary somewhat from area to area.  The shaft will range from about six feet for throwing spears, to about ten or twelve for a lance or pike.  In regions like the Frontier, where large bears and boar are very common, 'Boar Spears' with a crossbar to prevent an animal from forcing its way up the shaft, are most commonly seen.  The longer blades are seen on lances and pike length weapons, as well as on regular spears produced in Gemmatus, where it is a  preferred style.  Khun Dhagra spear tips tend to be shorter and squatter.  Goblin tips are ofyen single edged.
