Fabrics

The most common fabrics used throughout Velitrium are woven wool and linen. Wool ranges from a very heavy, thick cloth that is partially water repellent (blanket cloth), to a very light almost gauzy cloth used for veils by the wealthy. Silks are rare and expensive in Velitrium. Silk is often used in fine embroideries along with gold

"filament" threads (fine gold strips spun around a fibre core).

Linen is made from fibers harvested from the leaves and stalks of a type of flax plant native to the valley. The fibers are stripped, cleaned, spun and dried. The resulting cloth can vary widely from coarse burlaps and canvasas, to fine linen suitable for lace and gowns. Natural color is a pale tan, but is accepts dyes easily.

Colors

The majority of fabrics in Velitrium are un-dyed. The variety in fleece colors (brown, black, white and grey), make it possible to weave checked or striped fabrics without dying the wool. Actual colors include light and dark blue, red, yellow, brown and indigo. Dyes are made from animal and plant sources including shellfish, blue from

woad, yellow from weld, red from madder, yellowish-red from alder bark.
