Notes:
The terms "Duke Grade", "Prince Grade", "King Grade" are in reference to cost and do not refer to any limitations of class for ownership.
Mail Manufacturing Techniques: This impacts on the amount of protection the armor provides. Butted mail was extremely susceptible to impaling blows. The links often came open during this sort of attack, allowing the missile to punch through without slowing significantly. This drawback is reflected in the reduced PD and DR of chainmail in the Basic Set (see p.B210). Riveted mail, however, protected reasonably well against impaling attacks, and welded mail was even better again.
Riveted mail is a common manufacturing technique in the Desert lands, though some Velitar smyhs do make it, most riveted mail is imported.
Dawrven & Elven Armor: Both races have manufacturing techniques and features that are unique to their armor. Note: Just because a Player has an Elven or Dwarven character, it does not automaticly follow that he or she has these special armors at character creation. However, when that character has gathered the resources to acquire such armor, he or she will find it easier to do so then a character of another race. This is particularly true of Elves.
ARMOR CHART, Types of MAIL
Weight is WITH Padding PD and DR REFLECT PADDING!
PADDING MUST BE PAID FOR!
Light Mail: Should be considered the 'standard' type of mail. The links are on the lower end of the thickness scale and have a similar outside diameter to other types listed here. Reducing the diameter of the links would increase the total number of links required. In game terms there would be no effect until the links were quite small. The result of this would be Fine-Mesh mail -- see below.

Triple Mail: Extremely rare. The wire used for these links weighs three times that of light mail. Because of this, the inside diameter is relatively small -- individual links do not move as freely through each other and flexibility is compromised. Despite this, it provides excellent defence, but is extremely cumbersome to wear. Hand and foot protection cannot be made from triple mail. It is the heaviest mail armor available, adding +1PD and +2DR against all attacks

Lamellar Mail (also called Combined Mail: ) Combines small steel plates with mail for greatly improved protection. This is by far the most effective type of mail armor. Hand and foot protection cannot be made from combined mail. It adds +1PD and +2DR against all attacks; These links were always fairly heavy and should be treated as double mail. The term, ‘Scale Mail,’ (Not to be confused with Scale Armor) reflects lamellar mail with scale shaped plates.

Fine-Mesh Mail (p.CII43 sidebar): Small rings linked closely together result in a fine mesh with the consistency of heavy cloth. The rings are very small, as small as 3mm, and each one must be individually welded (they cannot be butted or riveted). Fine-mesh provides PD3 (cut./imp.), PD1 (cr); DR3 (cut./imp.), DR1 (cr.)

Note that this is the only mail that provides full protection without any sort of padding, and is ideal for wearing under clothing. Therefore, if fine-mesh were layered with padded cloth or leather, the DRs would combine. However, mail is notorious for staining and tearing clothing, so a protective layer of cloth (PD0; DR0; Cost $10; Weight 1 lb.) is recommended. Fine-mesh is excellent for concealment and gives +3 to any Holdout roll Wearing padding underneath would decrease the Holdout bonus to +1.
Fine mesh can be used to line a pair of boots, providing PD 4/2/4 DR 4/2/4 and adding 2lbs to the weight of the boots. Cost for knee high boots would be $600 includes boots

Light Leather
This is a very common form of protection amongst the farming community. The leather doublet, or jerkin, and the leggings and arm pieces, which are often sewn to the doublet, serve as excellant protection from thorns, and briars as well as being valuable when working around stock. Light leather is also quiet, making it much favored by hunters and some low life thief types. It is strong, flexible and light of weight. It is also cheap to make and most farm famlies can make it at home from leather left over from the fall slaughter. It’s main disadvantage as combat armor is the low protection it offers. It is sometimes used under armor as a padding layer. In this role it has two drawbacks. First, it is much hotter since the leather does not absorb sweat the way the cloth does, second, it lacks the buckles and attachment points of an arming doublet. Padding cannot be worn under light leather. Nor can light leather be worn under padding.

Armor Chart: Types of Scale Armor:
There are two main types of scale armor, which are dependent upon the size and gauge (thickness) of individual scales. Light scale is more attractive and comfortable, but heavy scale offers better protection. All scale armor is susceptible to impaling attacks from below, however, and thrusting attacks angled upwards reduce the PD (imp.) and DR (imp.) by -1. If the defender is at least three feet higher than the attacker (such as a horseman vs a footsoldier), then any thrusting attack with a Reach 2 or greater impaling weapon gets this advantage. If both combatants are on the same level, then this sort of attack can only be attempted from within Close Combat. It must be an underhand thrusting attack using a Close Combat impaling weapon (Reach C) such as a dagger
Augmentations
Several innovations were developed to improve the effectiveness of scale armor.
Medial ridge (TL2): To increase resistance to strong blows each individual scale was embossed along its back with a ridge or crease. The ridge provided extra reinforcing without increasing overall weight. This sort of scale armor was very attractive. It gave the impression of feathers +1 DR (cr.); +50% to cost and manufacture time; weight is unchanged.
Vertical lacing (TL2): lacing each scale to its vertical, as well as horizontal, neighbors. Flexibility was compromised slightly for the benefit of increased protection against impaling attacks. +1 DR (imp.); weight is increased a little (+1 lb); cost and manufacture time is +50%. Can only be applied to torso armor.
Padding may be worn with scale. PD and DR DO NOT reflect padding.
Light scale : Individual scales are fairly small (1/2 to 1 inch wide) and very thin. Their strength comes from the staggered, overlapping rows, and the backing behind them. Light scale is very flexible and can be fashioned into sleeves and leggings enabling all over bodily protection.

Heavy scale: This is the metal scale armor as described in Basic Set (p. B210) and Low-Tech (p. LT41). The scales are larger (up to 3 inches wide) and a heavier gauge than light scale. Heavy scale is also cumbersome and less flexible, so it is difficult to fashion into sleeves or leggings. Because of this, the entries for arm and leg scale armor in Basic Set (p. B210) and Low-Tech (p. LT116) should be disregarded (use the Light scale entries above instead). The shoulders, however, can be extended to protect part of the upper arms. It protects areas 6, 8 (roll 5-6 only).

Layering Armor
Any armor can be worn over any other, subject to GM approval. (NOTE: Rigid armor, such as the various types of plate and half plate, CANNOT be worn as the underlayer. It must be worn as the outer layer.)
The reduced weights listed above make mail a very favourable option when layered with other types of armor. Butted light mail worn under a plate corselet gives PD 4 and DR 10/8/8 and only weighs 48 lbs. The catch is that massive amounts of armor are bulky and hamper movement:
For every point by which the DR of the inner layers (every layer but the outermost layer) exceeds 3, reduce the wearer's effective DX by -1.
In the case of mail the DR varies. To solve this simply average the three DRs. However, always use the butted variety for determination. The type of manufacture technique makes no difference to the degree of bulkiness. So, use the average DR for Butted Light, Butted Augmented, Butted Bar, Butted Double,Butted Triple and Butted Lamellar.
Butted light mail: (4 + 2 + 2)/3 = 8/3 = 2.67. Because it does not exceed 3 there is no DX reduction. If Butted augmented mail was layered instead, the average DR would be 3.33 and so a DX penalty of -1 would be applied to the wearer.
Hauberks: The mail shirt is extended into a long skirt that falls down to the knees (protecting areas 9-11, 12-14, 17-18). It is split either up the sides for infantry, or front and back for cavalry. All types of mail can be hauberks. Manufacturing a hauberk adds +50% to the cost, weight, and production time of a mail shirt. This type of protection leaves the shins exposed, however, and any attack that hits the legs will strike the exposed part on a roll of 4-6.
Hauberks can be made from any flexible armor type. Cloth hauberks are normally called gambesons.

Blackening will reduce the amount of deterioration to a third (i.e. 1 penetration point for every 6 months of neglect). +20% to cost and production time.
Gilting reduces deterioration to 1 point every 3 years. It is counted as 'very fine' decoration and the armorer needs Jeweller 12+ to perform this process. Gilted armor costs 5x (gold plate is expensive) and production time is doubled.
Lacquering reduces deterioration to 1 point every 5 years. It is counted as 'fine' decoration. 3x cost and production time. Lacquering wears off over time and needs to be reapplied (once every 3 years). If not, the armor will deteriorate an extra point every time a lacquer coating was missed (1 point every three years).

Descriptions:
Padded Cap: Greatly improves comfort when wearing any helm. Mandatory under mail coif. Adds 1 to DR of all other helms.
Leather Helm: made of thick layers of boiled leather with some padding.
Spangenhelm: made of leather stretched over open iron frame, reinforced with wood plates. Covers only the top of the head.
Spangenhelm, metal: Replaces wood plates with metal.
Spangenhelms are commonly made and used by the Jhensari and the Goblins.
Cassis: similar construction to the Spangenhelm, but also covers back of neck and ears.
Cassis, metal: The wooden plates are replaced with metal.
The Cassis type helm is widely used by the Velitar and by the Orcs, Dwarves, Elves and Nomads.
Morion: this is similar to a pot helm but has a metal crest to reinforce the top and a heavy brim that covers the ears. This is bent up in front and rear like a boat prow so as not to hinder vision. Used generaly by the Velitar and the Dwarves.
Great Helm: Popular with the Knights of Velitrium. Closable face shield allows extra protection but hinders senses. Several styles available but most common is the flat front or face.
Vambrace: Is a splinted arm guard for the lower sword arm only. They run from elbow to wrist.
Sabatons & Greaves: Sabatons are mail `booties' or foot coverings that are worn over regular boots. Greaves are splinted shin/leg guards that run from knee to ankle.
Leggings, mail or leather: Chap like `pants' of mail or leather. Each leg is seperate but sold in pairs. Attached by laces to belt or straps under main armor.
